Demand for destinations offering both remote work opportunities and coastal bliss is on the rise, according to a new study. Whether you are looking for something more permanent or just a working holiday, we uncover some of the world’s best beach locations for remote workers.

Sadly, beloved beach locations in the UK and the US didn’t make the list, but we’ll be requesting readers’ favourites.

The study ranked destinations based on seven key criteria to give remote workers a comprehensive picture of each city:

  • Average summer temperature: Crucial for comfort, whether you’re tapping away indoors or taking a laptop to the balcony
  • Safety: No use trying to enjoy a beautiful beach spot if you’re constantly looking over your shoulder
  • Cost of living and accommodation: Because making your budget stretch is always a priority
  • Internet speed: The lifeblood of any remote profession
  • Availability of accommodation options: Plenty of choice makes for an easier transition
  • Coworking spaces: For when you need a dedicated workspace or a dose of community
  • Overall quality of life: Because a thriving personal life outside of work is just as important

Let’s take a closer look at the data that shapes these rankings:

Why these beach spots are worth it

Dubai claimed the top spot, boasting an impressive blend of amenities and lifestyle. With over 3,000 accommodation options and 192 coworking spaces, plus internet speeds exceeding 250 Mbps, it’s clearly set up for seamless remote work. Its high safety and quality of life ratings further cement its position as a premier choice for digital nomads.

Following closely, Abu Dhabi secured second place, notably as the safest city on the list with an outstanding quality of life score. Remote workers here benefit from super-fast internet (over 350 Mbps) and a plethora of scenic spots for unwinding after a productive day.

Bangkok ranked third, standing out for good value for money. With over 2,000 accommodation options and a low cost of living, it offers significant value, particularly when compared to pricier urban centres like Dubai or Hong Kong. Fast internet (over 260 Mbps) and a warm average summer temperature of 29°C make it an attractive option for budget-conscious professionals.

Hong Kong came in fourth, distinguished by its rapid internet and a remarkable 340+ coworking spaces – one of the highest tallies in the ranking. While the cost of living is on the higher side, its exciting urban environment, coupled with accessible beach escapes, provides a stimulating backdrop for remote work.

In fifth place, Barcelona emerged as Europe’s highest-ranked “workcation” destination. Combining 195 coworking spaces with fast internet, it’s tailored for both efficient work and leisurely beach days. Despite fewer accommodation options than some Asian counterparts, its lower humidity and vibrant beach lifestyle maintain its competitive edge.

Singapore occupied sixth place, featuring internet speeds up to 291 Mbps and a robust coworking scene. While its cost of living is notable, its urban efficiency and convenient beach access keep it firmly in the upper echelons of this list.

Coming in seventh, Hanoi proved to be the most budget-friendly option. It offers over 2,600 accommodation listings, though with comparatively lower internet speeds (101 Mbps) and fewer coworking spaces (74). The city’s consistent 29°C summer temperature, however, provides a consistently warm and inviting atmosphere for working by the coast.

Ranked eighth, Porto offers a more temperate summer climate of 20.73°C, ideal for comfortable beachside work breaks. With nearly 1,000 accommodation options and solid safety ratings, it presents a compelling European alternative to larger cities like Barcelona or Lisbon.

Lisbon secured ninth place, combining over 120 coworking spaces with a picturesque coastline and a moderate climate. While its internet speeds aren’t the absolute quickest, its overall liveability and excellent beach accessibility ensure its spot within the top 10.

Rounding out the top 10 is Split. This Croatian gem offers a high quality of life, strong safety ratings, and affordable living costs, making it a tranquil choice for those who prefer a more relaxed pace while still enjoying the benefits of a coastal setting.

Beyond the beach: Other remote working hotspots

While the dream of working from a sun-drenched beach is undeniably appealing, the world of remote work offers other fantastic locations, each with its own unique charm and benefits.

  • For the digital nomad hub seeker: Cities like Bali, Indonesia, and Medellín, Colombia, have, over time, cemented their status as true digital nomad havens. These spots frequently score highly on platforms like Nomad List for their vibrant communities, affordable living, and extensive infrastructure, including a wealth of coworking spaces.
  • For the culture lovers: If immersing yourself in history and a buzzing arts scene is more your style, consider locations like Berlin, Germany. Known for its eclectic creative spirit and a relatively lower cost of living compared to other major European capitals, it’s a magnet for those seeking cultural stimulation alongside their work. Similarly, Mexico City, Mexico, offers an intoxicating blend of world-class cuisine, museums, and a dynamic urban energy, all at a surprisingly reasonable price point.
  • For the mountain air enthusiast: If coastal breezes aren’t quite your preferred backdrop, look to locations nestled amongst mountains or national parks. Imagine tackling your to-do list with a view of the majestic Alps in Annecy, France, also known as the Venice of the Alps, or the dramatic peaks of the Rockies in Boulder, Colorado. These destinations often promise an excellent work-life balance, with abundant opportunities for outdoor activities that can invigorate both mind and body. Research into well-being and productivity often suggests that access to natural environments can significantly boost creativity and alleviate stress.
  • For the savvy saver: Beyond the aforementioned Hanoi, there are numerous other incredibly affordable options across the globe. Cities in Eastern Europe, such as Budapest, Hungary, or Krakow, Poland, stand out. They offer a high quality of life, reliable internet, and a significantly lower cost of living, allowing your hard-earned cash to stretch considerably further.

TOP Travel tip: If you come across a sign or menu in a foreign language, you can translate it instantly by taking a photo of it with your mobile phone and uploading the image to Google Translate.
