Refute’s latest funding round could mean job opportunities are on the table. Galu said their funding round will  “enable us to grow our engineering organisation, expand our detection models and advance our response capabilities across European markets.”

Specialist contractors could be the ones to help the business accelerate its innovation, so the business can increase its capacity to “detect and neutralise emerging threats at exponentially growing scales.”

How does this technology work?

The technology behind this field acts like a digital smoke alarm. It scans the internet to find “fake news” before it goes viral. It uses smart software to tell the difference between a real customer and a computer-generated attack. Disinformation detection tools are now a critical market segment, driven by rising regulatory pressure and the need for real-time monitoring.

According to one report,

The global disinformation detection tools market is projected to reach $0.58 billion by 2025, exhibiting a substantial CAGR of 28.8%. This growth is fuelled by the escalating spread of fake news and misinformation, heightened data privacy concerns, and the increasing integration of AI and machine learning technologies.

For a freelancer, this tech is a game-changer. You can use these tools to protect clients who are too busy to monitor the internet themselves. You can charge a premium for their peace of mind and your expertise.

Why is this technology such a talking point in 2026?

Hungary, Italy, France, Spain, Germany, Sweden and Denmark are among the many European countries preparing for local and national elections in 2026.

According to Refute research, approximately 1,135 bots are pushing narratives across all stages of mining activity. Interestingly, 40% of the mines that Refute monitored have faced disruptive disinformation attacks powered by inauthentic activity.

A recent example in the mining sector involved Sigma Lithium Corporation, which said, according to reports, that it had been the subject of “a well-orchestrated and well-funded online defamatory campaign, which has repeatedly made claims with respect to the company or its management that were false, inaccurate and misleading.”

To avoid fines, keep stock prices from tumbling, and ultimately stay in business, mining companies must do more than just dig holes and move rocks. They are currently facing a high-tech “war of words” that is getting harder to win.

Mining companies need strong allies to protect their business. But more importantly, they have to get really good at spotting “hybrid campaigns.” These are organised efforts where people spread lies and misleading stories (disinformation) specifically designed to ruin the company’s reputation and turn the public against it.
