The art of writing can take years to develop. But with the onset of language models and artificial intelligence, the “art” of writing original content is no longer down to the individual writer. It’s an accumulation of scraped web-based data of other people’s thoughts, views, words, cited facts and figures.

AI-generated content is on the rise, but is it any match for original content? That depends if you are reading a news story, a feature in a newspaper or magazine or a blog piece on a corporate website. What could be interesting to see develop is the collision of citizen journalism and AI writing capabilities. Elon Musk is likely to see this convergence in content grow on his messaging platform X.

In an X post, he wrote: “Citizen journalism is the path to [a] better future! I strongly encourage people around the world to post news about events as they’re happening, in both text & video.”

However, organisations will still need editors to ensure content is readable, well written and fact-checked. That’s where AI content editors will come in.

What do AI content editors do?

AI content editors are responsible for reviewing and editing content that has been written by AI. This can include blog posts, articles, website copy, and even social media posts. AI content editors can help to ensure that the content is accurate, informative, and engaging.

In a recent interview on Yahoo Finance, journalists Josh Schafer, Brooke DiPalma, and Alexandra Canal discussed the rise of AI content editing jobs. Schafer noted that this is a positive development, as it shows that AI is creating new jobs, rather than taking them away.

“I think this is just fascinating because it’s what I’ve been saying about how you can see AI being useful for people to create more jobs or at least create opportunity, right?” Schafer said. “Use AI to your advantage. Let it do something for you and then come in and edit it. I already know friends that do this with work emails.”

Canal agreed, noting that AI content editing could be a great side gig for many people. “I mean, this is a great side gig,” she said. “I’m, like, should I be an AI content editor? Like, I could do it.”

DiPalma noted that the rise of AI content editing jobs is also bringing more people to freelance job platforms. “People want to work remote right now and this is bringing yet another opportunity for employees to work remote,” she said.

A Fiverr representative told Schafer that AI content editing jobs are coming in at about $100 to $125 per project. This amount for some seasoned journalists and copywriters might not be on par with if they actually wrote an original piece and could ask for higher rates. Therefore, these jobs might just be extras that seasoned people can turn around at a high quantity to make an extra buck.

But will their heart be in it?

Challenges of AI content editing

The experts also discussed the challenges of AI content editing. Schafer noted that AI content editors often have to deal with oddly mismatched, funny or inaccurate content that has been written by AI.

“I think the content editor is going to be reading some funny stuff if you’re editing AI, right?” Schafer said. “That’s someone I want to interview. Like, how bad is it? How bad is it sometimes? Like, what it writes originally when you’re reading through it, there’s got to be some funny stuff in there.”

Canal compared AI content editing to using Google Translate. “If you did it in Google Translator, it was always wrong. And you had to go back and make sure and edit it,” she said. “So it, sort of– reminds me of when I would take different languages in school.”

Overall, the experts believe that the rise of AI content editing jobs is a positive development. AI content editing can help businesses improve the quality of their content, and it can also create new opportunities for people to work remotely.
